Most Common Core Gear Types
- Spur Gears (Straight-cut cylindrical gears): Characterized by simple structure, ease of manufacturing, and manageable costs. They offer transmission efficiency of 98%–99% and generate no axial thrust. Suitable for the vast majority of general-purpose machinery operating at low-to-medium speeds and light loads, they are the most ubiquitous basic gear type, widely used in applications such as clocks, small machinery, and standard conveyor systems.
- Involute Profile Gears: In terms of tooth geometry, the involute profile is the most widely used type. It facilitates standardized manufacturing and ensures high interchangeability. Covering over 90% of industrial gear transmission applications, it serves as the fundamental tooth profile for all mainstream gear types.
Common Types for High-Load Applications
- Helical Gears (Helical cylindrical gears): These offer smooth transmission and high load-bearing capacity, with significantly lower noise and impact compared to spur gears. They are the dominant choice for high-speed, heavy-load applications-such as automotive transmissions, machine tool drives, and wind turbines-and account for a substantial share of high-end industrial transmission systems.
- Straight Bevel Gears: As the standard type for intersecting-axis transmission, these are the most common gears used in automotive differentials and equipment requiring 90-degree directional changes; they are also widely utilized in power steering systems.
