Definition and Classification
A worm is a power transmission component featuring helical teeth; it is typically paired with a worm gear to form a worm gear set, enabling power transmission between non-parallel, non-intersecting (skewed) shafts.
Common types include Archimedean worms, normal straight-profile worms, and involute worms, as well as specialized categories such as speed-reducer worms, precision worm gear sets, and whirl-milled worms.

 

Key Performance Characteristics
They enable high gear ratios and feature a compact structure; operation is smooth and quiet, and certain single-start worms possess a self-locking capability.
Standard worms are typically made of 45-grade steel subjected to quenching and tempering, achieving a hardness of HRC 45–55; worms made of 40Cr steel can be quenched to HRC 50–55, and precision grinding allows for a surface roughness of Ra 0.8 μm.
